  • What are the work experience requirements for CFP certification?

    Before applying for CFP® certification, candidates must have completed three years of qualifying financial planning work experience. For more information, refer to our Work Experience page. 

  • How recent does my work experience need to be? How much time do I have to complete the work experience requirement?

    Your work experience must be completed in the eight years preceding the application for CFP certification and a maximum of four years following the successful completion of the CFP examination.

  • How do I know if my work experience qualifies?

    Qualifying experience is based on a 35-hour work week. It’s defined as full-time (or full-time equivalent) paid financial planning-related employment or self-employment. In your work you must use job-related knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgments to meet your clients’ needs. FPSC will evaluate your work experience when you apply for CFP certification.   • My work in financial planning is part-time. Does this still qualify for the work experience requirement?

    Yes, as long as the total number of hours is equivalent to three years of full-time financial planning work experience. Based on 35 hours per week, the requirement totals 5,460 hours of qualifying financial planning work experience. 

  • What documentation do I need to submit to verify my work experience?

    You will need to provide a résumé detailing work experience and specific start/end dates and a letter signed by your current or most recent supervisor with details of your position, nature of activities, start/end dates (if appropriate) and the signatory’s contact information. If you are an independent financial planner who is affiliated with a financial institution or a fee-only planner with no financial institution affiliation, you must provide a letter from two personal financial planning clients which include a detailed description of financial planning services provided, the length of time you have provided these services and the client’s contact information.

  • Do I need work experience to move along the path to CFP certification?

    No, you don’t. You can take the Core Curriculum program, FPSC Level 1® Examination in Financial Planning, Capstone Course and CFP examination without having any work experience. Keep in mind that you must have completed your three years of qualifying financial planning work experience a maximum of four years following the successful completion of the CFP examination (otherwise you will need to repeat the CFP examination).
